Military Families Financial Survey Fact Sheet

Chase Card Services commissioned a survey that included more than 600 interviews with active duty military personnel and their spouses to better understand the financial strain that many families experience and to identify the programs they believed would best help them manage their finances. Interviews were conducted October 23-25, 2007.

Families Facing Financial Strain

  • Seven in ten military families say having a family member in the military, particularly one on active military duty overseas, puts an extra financial burden on the entire family.
  • However, awareness of special financial programs for military families is low. Six in ten are not aware of any credit card companies providing special programs and financial tools for military cardmembers.
  • The most popular source of information for military families to learn about credit card services is the Internet.

Testing Potential Programs

The survey tested potential programs that Chase might offer their customers who have a family in the military. More than nine in ten military families said these programs would help ease the financial burden of having a family member on active duty overseas.

These programs fell into three categories: Tangible Financial Benefits, Informational Resources, and Donations.

Most Popular Programs

  • Helping Those in Harm's Way: Chase will reimburse finance charges for up to one year for any cardmember in the military who is serving overseas in a combat zone.
  • Supporting Military Families: For a Chase's employees who serve in the military, the issuer will continue to pay their employees their full salaries during their active duty deployments, and also maintain their full benefits. This ensures that these families are able to keep up the same lifestyle and access the same services during deployments.
  • Military Scholarships: A Chase will provide scholarships to military dependents enrolling in a college or university.
  • Lower Fees and Interest Rates: Families that use military credit cards, whether club cards or exchange cards, will receive lower fees and interest rates year-round compared to the average credit card, regardless of active duty status.

Note: Margin of error for the entire sample is ±4.0%.
